A DECADE OF GARDENING IN ST. LOUIS
Barbara’s Garden
Approximately 10 years ago my wife asked me to build her a container gardens her to grow vegetables and herbs. As part of that project I decided to remove every blade of grass in the backyard which in my opinion served no real purpose, other than to waste our time and energy in maintaining it.
In addition to providing the manual labor, I also took on the task of attempting to capture each flower in their special moment of time. The result was a photo bouquet of unpicked flowers contained in this book. Barbara and I would like to share the beauty of our garden and its inhabitants, our friends the bees, with you. We hope you enjoy the the delight of the sight and scent given us by each flower from dawn to dusk
.
As the project grew we created a fish pond, fountain, small stream and water fall. Our backyard garden remains incomplete after five years. However the initial investments in perennials and native species have returned a bounty of flowers from spring to fall.
There is the matter of the crabapple tree.
here it stands, wintering, you might say,
in the small front yard
Between the veranda and the sidewalk…
Damp with spring rain
he came through her gate lay hidden in the grass
the crabapple blossoms
flushed with pleasure
that evening
